Neil Shipman, my brother, suffered a spinal injury in 1971 when he was 20. It left him quadriplegic and confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Despite this, however, he was determined to make the best of what life had dealt him and over time, and with the love and support of family and friends, he learned to live with his disability. Neil re-trained for a new career; learnt to drive again; saved enough to buy and convert his own place in order to live independently; won a medal at the Stoke Mandeville Games (forerunner the Paralympics); and generally enjoyed a very full and rewarding life, almost always remaining positive and cheerful. He died in 2010 aged 59. He was an amazing man, my brother!
